Revolutionizing Motion Sensing with the ISM330BX

STMicroelectronics has launched the ISM330BX, a 6-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) that combines edge-AI processing, an analog hub for sensor expansion, and ST’s Qvar electric charge variation sensing technology. This device promises greater energy efficiency in industrial sensing and motion tracking applications.

The ISM330BX integrates a 3-axis gyroscope and a 3-axis accelerometer with a low-noise architecture and a bandwidth of up to 2kHz. This capability makes it ideal for vibration sensing in machine tool condition monitoring applications. Additionally, it is applicable in industrial and domestic robots, automated guided vehicles (AGV), intelligent appliances, and motion trackers.

Edge Processing and Energy Efficiency

The ISM330BX IMU incorporates an edge-processing engine that combines a machine learning core (MLC) with AI algorithms and a finite state machine (FSM). This configuration offloads the main processor and saves system power. Additionally, the ISM330BX integrates ST’s Sensor Fusion Low-Power (SFLP) algorithm for 3D orientation tracking, which can enhance energy efficiency in applications such as robotics and smart safety helmets. Thanks to adaptive self-configuration (ASC), the sensor can optimize its settings in real-time for the best performance and power consumption.

The ISM330BX’s autonomous capabilities reduce data transmission between the IMU and the host system, and offload the main processor, ensuring low latency and low power consumption. The integrated analog hub offers more opportunities for efficient system integration by directly connecting external analog sensors to the edge-processing engine for data filtering and AI inference. These features enable engineers to create innovative industrial sensors and other battery-powered smart devices, improving existing industrial assets and preparing them for Industry 5.0.

Innovation in the MEMS Ecosystem

With ST’s Qvar electric charge variation detector also built-in, the IMU can provide touch and close-proximity detection, as well as additional functionalities like water leak detection, enhancing system integration and energy efficiency.

The launch of the ISM330BX advances MEMS technology for industrial markets and enriches the MEMS ecosystem by offering developers access to essential hardware such as the STEVAL-MKI245KA adapter board. Additionally, software resources, including MEMS Studio and ready-to-use application examples on GitHub, are available free of charge, presenting a collaborative environment for innovation.
