STMicroelectronics and Geely Boost Electric Vehicles

Innovation in Electric Drivetrains

The collaboration between STMicroelectronics and Geely Auto Group promises to revolutionize the efficiency of the electric drivetrains in the Chinese automaker’s battery electric vehicles (BEV). This long-term agreement focuses on supplying third-generation Silicon Carbide (SiC) devices from STMicroelectronics, aimed at significantly enhancing the performance of Geely’s mid-to-high-end electric vehicles. The adoption of these SiC devices will enable Geely to increase charging speed and extend the range of their electric vehicles, crucial aspects for competitiveness in the electric vehicle market.

This agreement is a key component in Geely’s New Energy Vehicle (NEV) transformation strategy, facilitating a smoother transition to full electrification and solidifying its position in the global automotive sector.

Establishing a Joint Innovation Lab

A highlight of this collaboration is the creation of a joint innovation lab between the two companies. This lab will focus on information exchange and the development of innovative solutions in automotive electrical/electronic architectures (E/E), advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and next-generation electric vehicle technologies.

According to Li Chuanhai, President of the Electronic and Electrical Center of Geely Automotive Central Research Institute, this alliance represents an opportunity to leverage the strengths and resources of both companies, accelerating the implementation of innovative technologies in Geely’s automotive sector.

Meanwhile, Fu Zhaohui, Director of the Electronic and Electrical Center of Geely Automotive Central Research Institute, emphasized that this cooperation deepens long-term collaboration in key areas such as smart driving. This joint approach will enable both companies to better respond to customer needs, speeding up the introduction of new products and solutions to the market.

Impact on the New Energy Vehicle Market

In 2023, Geely Auto sold a total of 1.68 million vehicles, of which 480,000 were New Energy Vehicles (NEVs), accounting for 28% of its total sales. This 48% year-on-year increase in NEV sales demonstrates Geely’s successful transition towards electrification and its growing influence in the automotive industry.

Henry Cao, Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the China Region at STMicroelectronics, highlighted that China is the largest NEV market in the world and a leader in innovation. The creation of local competence centers and joint labs with their customers enables STMicroelectronics to better support automotive innovation and transformation in China.

This agreement not only strengthens the existing cooperation between STMicroelectronics and Geely but also marks a significant step towards consolidating a more robust and efficient vehicle electrification and digitalization strategy, benefiting both parties in developing cutting-edge technologies for the future of transportation
